House Concurrent Resolution 106 PAG LIN 1 1 HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION NO. 1 2 BY PETERSEN and HUSER 1 3 A Concurrent Resolution requesting that the legislative 1 4 council establish an interim study committee to study 1 5 internet voting. 1 6 WHEREAS, the right of citizens to vote is a 1 7 cornerstone of American democracy; and 1 8 WHEREAS, improving voting access for citizens while 1 9 maintaining citizens' trust in the confidential nature 1 10 of voting are laudable goals of governments and their 1 11 officials; and 1 12 WHEREAS, increasing voter turnout is a constant 1 13 challenge for governments and their officials around 1 14 the nation and for political parties; and 1 15 WHEREAS, use of the internet has become common 1 16 practice for millions of Americans; and 1 17 WHEREAS, it is incumbent upon government officials 1 18 to take steps to ensure public trust and confidence in 1 19 voting technology; NOW THEREFORE, 1 20 BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES, THE 1 21 SENATE CONCURRING, That the legislative council is 1 22 requested to establish a legislative interim study 1 23 committee for the 2004 interim on internet voting, 1 24 including whether it is feasible to consider use of 1 25 that type of voting system in Iowa; and 1 26 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That the interim committee 1 27 shall submit a report of its findings and 1 28 recommendations relating to internet voting to the 1 29 General Assembly by January 15, 2005. 1 30 LSB 5235YH 80 2 1 sc/sh/8
