The term <xhtml:span class="term">“athletic training”</xhtml:span> includes the organization and administration of educational programs and athletic facilities, and the education and counseling of the public on matters relating to athletic training.</xhtml:p></xhtml:div><xhtml:div class="subsection"><xhtml:div class="heading"><xhtml:span class="identifier">5</xhtml:span></xhtml:div><xhtml:p class="para"><xhtml:span class="term">“Board”</xhtml:span> means the board of athletic training created under <xhtml:span class="iowaCodeRef">chapter 147</xhtml:span>.</xhtml:p></xhtml:div><xhtml:div class="history"><xhtml:div class="historyItem"><xhtml:p class="p"><xhtml:span class="iowaActsRef">94 Acts, ch 1132, §1</xhtml:span>; <xhtml:span class="iowaActsRef">98 Acts, ch 1053, §36, 37</xhtml:span>; <xhtml:span class="iowaActsRef">2004 Acts, ch 1045, §3</xhtml:span>; <xhtml:span class="iowaActsRef">2007 Acts, ch 10, §131</xhtml:span></xhtml:p></xhtml:div></xhtml:div></slim:Section><slim:Section class="codeSection" id="sec152D.2"><xhtml:div class="heading"><xhtml:span class="identifier">152D.2</xhtml:span><xhtml:span class="headnote">Licensing and practice requirements.</xhtml:span></xhtml:div><xhtml:p class="para">Repealed by <xhtml:span class="iowaActsRef">2004 Acts, ch 1045, §11</xhtml:span>.<xhtml:span class="em-space"/>See <xhtml:span class="iowaCodeRef">§152D.7</xhtml:span>. </xhtml:p></slim:Section><slim:Section class="codeSection" id="sec152D.3"><xhtml:div class="heading"><xhtml:span class="identifier">152D.3</xhtml:span><xhtml:span class="headnote">Requirements for licensure.</xhtml:span></xhtml:div><xhtml:div class="subsection"><xhtml:div class="heading"><xhtml:span class="identifier">1</xhtml:span></xhtml:div><xhtml:p class="para">An applicant for a license to practice athletic training shall:</xhtml:p><xhtml:div class="letteredPara"><xhtml:div class="heading"><xhtml:span class="identifier">a</xhtml:span></xhtml:div><xhtml:p class="para">Be a graduate of an accredited college or university and comply with the minimum athletic training curriculum requirements established by the board.</xhtml:p></xhtml:div><xhtml:div class="letteredPara"><xhtml:div class="heading"><xhtml:span class="identifier">b</xhtml:span></xhtml:div><xhtml:p class="para">Have successfully completed an examination prepared or selected by the board.</xhtml:p></xhtml:div></xhtml:div><xhtml:div class="subsection"><xhtml:div class="heading"><xhtml:span class="identifier">2</xhtml:span></xhtml:div><xhtml:p class="para">Application and renewal procedures, fees, and reciprocal agreements shall be provided in accordance with rules adopted by the board pursuant to <xhtml:span class="iowaCodeRef">chapter 17A</xhtml:span>.</xhtml:p></xhtml:div><xhtml:div class="history"><xhtml:div class="historyItem"><xhtml:p class="p"><xhtml:span class="iowaActsRef">94 Acts, ch 1132, §3</xhtml:span>; <xhtml:span class="iowaActsRef">95 Acts, ch 94, §2</xhtml:span>; <xhtml:span class="iowaActsRef">98 Acts, ch 1053, §38</xhtml:span>; <xhtml:span class="iowaActsRef">2004 Acts, ch 1045, §4</xhtml:span></xhtml:p></xhtml:div></xhtml:div></slim:Section><slim:Section class="codeSection" id="sec152D.4"><xhtml:div class="heading"><xhtml:span class="identifier">152D.4</xhtml:span><xhtml:span class="headnote">Scope of chapter.</xhtml:span></xhtml:div><xhtml:p class="para">The provisions of <xhtml:span class="iowaCodeRef">this chapter</xhtml:span> do not apply to any of the following:</xhtml:p><xhtml:div class="subsection"><xhtml:div class="heading"><xhtml:span class="identifier">1</xhtml:span></xhtml:div><xhtml:p class="para">Persons otherwise licensed to practice medicine and surgery, osteopathic medicine and surgery, optometry, occupational therapy, nursing, chiropractic, podiatry, dentistry, or physical therapy, and licensed physician assistants who do not represent themselves to the public as athletic trainers.</xhtml:p></xhtml:div><xhtml:div class="subsection"><xhtml:div class="heading"><xhtml:span class="identifier">2</xhtml:span></xhtml:div><xhtml:p class="para">Elementary or secondary school teachers, coaches, or authorized volunteers who do not hold themselves out to the public as athletic trainers.</xhtml:p></xhtml:div><xhtml:div class="subsection"><xhtml:div class="heading"><xhtml:span class="identifier">3</xhtml:span></xhtml:div><xhtml:p class="para">Students of athletic training who practice athletic training under the supervision of a licensed athletic trainer in connection with the regular course of instruction at a school providing athletic training instruction.</xhtml:p></xhtml:div><xhtml:div class="subsection"><xhtml:div class="heading"><xhtml:span class="identifier">4</xhtml:span></xhtml:div><xhtml:p class="para">An athletic trainer who is in this state temporarily with an individual or group that is participating in an athletic event and who is licensed, certified, or registered by another state or country, or certified as an athletic trainer by the board of certification of the national athletic trainers association or its successor organization.</xhtml:p></xhtml:div><xhtml:div class="history"><xhtml:div class="historyItem"><xhtml:p class="p"><xhtml:span class="iowaActsRef">94 Acts, ch 1132, §4</xhtml:span>; <xhtml:span class="iowaActsRef">2004 Acts, ch 1045, §5, 6</xhtml:span>; <xhtml:span class="iowaActsRef">2006 Acts, ch 1010, §55</xhtml:span>; <xhtml:span class="iowaActsRef">2008 Acts, ch 1088, §141</xhtml:span></xhtml:p></xhtml:div></xhtml:div></slim:Section><slim:Section class="codeSection" id="sec152D.5"><xhtml:div class="heading"><xhtml:span class="identifier">152D.5</xhtml:span><xhtml:span class="headnote">Duties of the board.</xhtml:span></xhtml:div><xhtml:p class="para">The board shall:</xhtml:p><xhtml:div class="subsection"><xhtml:div class="heading"><xhtml:span class="identifier">1</xhtml:span></xhtml:div><xhtml:p class="para">Adopt rules consistent with <xhtml:span class="iowaCodeRef">this chapter</xhtml:span> and <xhtml:span class="iowaCodeRef">chapter 147</xhtml:span> which are necessary for the performance of its duties.</xhtml:p></xhtml:div><xhtml:div class="subsection"><xhtml:div class="heading"><xhtml:span class="identifier">2</xhtml:span></xhtml:div><xhtml:p class="para">Establish standards and guidelines for athletic trainers including minimum curriculum requirements.</xhtml:p></xhtml:div><xhtml:div class="subsection"><xhtml:div class="heading"><xhtml:span class="identifier">3</xhtml:span></xhtml:div><xhtml:p class="para">Prepare and conduct, or prescribe, an examination for applicants for a license.</xhtml:p></xhtml:div><xhtml:div class="subsection"><xhtml:div class="heading"><xhtml:span class="identifier">4</xhtml:span></xhtml:div><xhtml:p class="para">Establish a system for the collection of licensure fees.</xhtml:p></xhtml:div><xhtml:div class="history"><xhtml:div class="historyItem"><xhtml:p class="p"><xhtml:span class="iowaActsRef">94 Acts, ch 1132, §5</xhtml:span>; <xhtml:span class="iowaActsRef">98 Acts, ch 1053, §40</xhtml:span></xhtml:p></xhtml:div></xhtml:div></slim:Section><slim:Section class="codeSection" id="sec152D.7"><xhtml:div class="heading"><xhtml:span class="identifier">152D.7</xhtml:span><xhtml:span class="headnote">Practice or use of title — license required.</xhtml:span></xhtml:div><xhtml:div class="subsection"><xhtml:div class="heading"><xhtml:span class="identifier">1</xhtml:span></xhtml:div><xhtml:p class="para">An individual licensed pursuant to <xhtml:span class="iowaCodeRef">this chapter</xhtml:span> shall be designated a licensed athletic trainer and may use the letters “LAT” after the individual’s name.</xhtml:p></xhtml:div><xhtml:div class="subsection"><xhtml:div class="heading"><xhtml:span class="identifier">2</xhtml:span></xhtml:div><xhtml:p class="para">It is unlawful for a person to engage in the practice of athletic training, or use in connection with the person’s name the title “athletic trainer”, “licensed athletic trainer”, “registered athletic trainer”, the letters “AT”, “AT,C”, “LAT”, “ATC/L”, or “ATC-L”, or other words, abbreviations, or insignia that imply or represent that the person practices athletic training, unless the person is licensed pursuant to <xhtml:span class="iowaCodeRef">this chapter</xhtml:span>.</xhtml:p></xhtml:div><xhtml:div class="subsection"><xhtml:div class="heading"><xhtml:span class="identifier">3</xhtml:span></xhtml:div><xhtml:p class="para">The practice of physical reconditioning shall be carried out under the oral or written orders of a physician or physician assistant. A physician or physician assistant who issues an oral order must reduce the order to writing and provide a copy of the order to the athletic trainer within thirty days of the oral order.</xhtml:p></xhtml:div><xhtml:div class="history"><xhtml:div class="historyItem"><xhtml:p class="p"><xhtml:span class="iowaActsRef">2004 Acts, ch 1045, §8</xhtml:span></xhtml:p></xhtml:div></xhtml:div></slim:Section><slim:Section class="codeSection" id="sec152D.8"><xhtml:div class="heading"><xhtml:span class="identifier">152D.8</xhtml:span><xhtml:span class="headnote">Penalty.</xhtml:span></xhtml:div><xhtml:p class="para">A person who violates a provision of <xhtml:span class="iowaCodeRef">this chapter</xhtml:span> is guilty of a serious misdemeanor.</xhtml:p><xhtml:div class="history"><xhtml:div class="historyItem"><xhtml:p class="p"><xhtml:span class="iowaActsRef">94 Acts, ch 1132, §8</xhtml:span>; <xhtml:span class="iowaActsRef">2004 Acts, ch 1045, §9</xhtml:span></xhtml:p></xhtml:div></xhtml:div></slim:Section><slim:Section class="codeSection" id="sec152D.9"><xhtml:div class="heading"><xhtml:span class="identifier">152D.9</xhtml:span><xhtml:span class="headnote">Transition provisions.</xhtml:span></xhtml:div><xhtml:div class="subsection"><xhtml:div class="heading"><xhtml:span class="identifier">1</xhtml:span></xhtml:div><xhtml:p class="para">Applicants for licensure under <xhtml:span class="iowaCodeRef">this chapter</xhtml:span> who have not passed a licensure examination administered or approved by the board by July 1, 2004, shall be issued a temporary license to practice athletic training for a period of three years, commencing on July 1, 2004, provided that the applicant satisfies all of the following requirements:</xhtml:p><xhtml:div class="letteredPara"><xhtml:div class="heading"><xhtml:span class="identifier">a</xhtml:span></xhtml:div><xhtml:p class="para">Submits a letter of recommendation to the board from the applicant’s most recent employer.</xhtml:p></xhtml:div><xhtml:div class="letteredPara"><xhtml:div class="heading"><xhtml:span class="identifier">b</xhtml:span></xhtml:div><xhtml:p class="para">Submits letters of recommendation to the board from two licensed physicians attesting to the competency of the applicant.</xhtml:p></xhtml:div><xhtml:div class="letteredPara"><xhtml:div class="heading"><xhtml:span class="identifier">c</xhtml:span></xhtml:div><xhtml:p class="para">Presents satisfactory evidence to the board that the applicant possesses current cardiopulmonary resuscitation and first aid certification.</xhtml:p></xhtml:div><xhtml:div class="letteredPara"><xhtml:div class="heading"><xhtml:span class="identifier">d</xhtml:span></xhtml:div><xhtml:p class="para">Presents satisfactory evidence to the board demonstrating that the applicant possesses a baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university.</xhtml:p></xhtml:div></xhtml:div><xhtml:div class="subsection"><xhtml:div class="heading"><xhtml:span class="identifier">2</xhtml:span></xhtml:div><xhtml:p class="para">An applicant issued a temporary license pursuant to <xhtml:span class="iowaCodeRef">this section</xhtml:span> shall pass a licensure examination administered or approved by the board on or before July 1, 2007, in order to remain licensed as an athletic trainer.</xhtml:p></xhtml:div><xhtml:div class="history"><xhtml:div class="historyItem"><xhtml:p class="p"><xhtml:span class="iowaActsRef">2004 Acts, ch 1045, §10</xhtml:span></xhtml:p></xhtml:div></xhtml:div></slim:Section></slim:Level></slim:Body></slim:Document>
