Beginning with the 2019-2020 school year, in conjunction 3 with the social studies curriculum, a project-based assessment 4 in civics. Alternative assessment measures approved by the 5 department of education pursuant to section 256.9, subsection 6 60, may be administered to children requiring special education 7 as defined in section 256B.2, subsection 1. Each school 8 district and accredited nonpublic school shall develop and 9 design the assessments administered under this paragraph 10 to measure the civics learning objectives contained in the 11 social studies curriculum and to demonstrate understanding and 12 relevance of public policy, the structure of federal, state, 13 and local governments, and the Constitution of the State of 14 Iowa and the Constitution of the United States. 15 Sec. ___. Section 280.9A, Code 2018, is amended by adding 16 the following new subsection: 17 NEW SUBSECTION . 4.
