Page 12, after line 24 by inserting: 3 < DIVISION ___ 4 SOCIAL STUDIES STANDARDS —— PROHIBITION 5 Sec. ___. Section 256.7, subsection 26, paragraph a, 6 unnumbered paragraph 1, Code 2018, is amended to read as 7 follows: 8 Adopt rules that establish a core curriculum and high school 9 graduation requirements for all students in school districts 10 and accredited nonpublic schools that include at a minimum 11 satisfactory completion of four years of English and language 12 arts, three years of mathematics, three years of science, and 13 three years of social studies. The state board shall not 14 adopt, and the department shall not authorize or require, 15 statewide core social studies standards for kindergarten 16 through grade twelve. This prohibition shall not be construed 17 to limit the state board’s or the department’s authority 18 relating to the accreditation of school districts and nonpublic 19 schools under section 256.11. 20 Sec. ___. Section 256.7, subsection 26, paragraph a, 21 subparagraph (3), Code 2018, is amended to read as follows: 22 (3) The rules establishing a core curriculum shall address 23 the core content standards in subsection 28 and the skills and 24 knowledge students need to be successful in the twenty-first 25 century. The core curriculum shall include social studies and 26 twenty-first century learning skills which include , including 27 but are not limited to civic literacy, health literacy, 28 technology literacy, financial literacy, family life and 29 consumer sciences, and employability skills; and shall address 30 the curricular needs of students in kindergarten through grade 31 twelve in those areas.
