NEW SECTION . 514C.5A Prescription drug 4 medication synchronization. 5 1. A carrier, as defined in section 513B.2, that 6 provides prescription drug coverage through a policy 7 or contract delivered, issued for delivery, continued, 8 or renewed on or after January 1, 2017, shall develop 9 and offer medication synchronization services that 10 allow for the alignment of refill dates for a covered 11 individual’s prescription drugs that are a covered 12 benefit. At a minimum, the carrier shall cover 13 dispensing fees at a rate no lower than the contracted 14 amount and the services shall include early refill and 15 short fill requests for prescription drugs using the 16 submission clarification and message codes adopted by 17 the national council for prescription drug plans or 18 alternative codes specified by the carrier. 19 2. For purposes of this section, “medication 20 synchronization” means the coordination of medication 21 refills for a patient taking two or more medications 22 for a chronic condition that are dispensed by a single 23 network pharmacy to facilitate the synchronization 24 of an individual’s medications for the purpose of 25 improving medication adherence. > 26 2.
