279.10,
subsection
1,
Code

2015,
is
amended
to
read
as
follows:

1.
The
school
year
for
each
school
district
and
6
accredited
nonpublic
school
shall
begin
on
July
1
and
7
each
regularly
established
elementary
and
secondary
8
school
shall
begin
no
sooner
than
a
day
during
the
9
calendar
week
in
which
the
first
day
of
September
10
falls
but
no
later
than
the
first
Monday
in
December
.
11
However,
if
the
first
day
of
September
falls
on
a
12
Sunday,
school
may
begin
on
a
day
during
the
calendar
13
week
which
immediately
precedes
the
first
day
of
14
September.
The
school
calendar
shall
include
not
15
less
than
one
hundred
eighty
days,
except
as
provided
16
in
subsection
3
,
or
one
thousand
eighty
hours
of
17
instruction
during
the
calendar
year.
The
board
of
18
directors
of
a
school
district
and
the
authorities
19
in
charge
of
an
accredited
nonpublic
school
shall
20
determine
the
school
start
date
for
the
school
calendar
21
based
on
the
best
educational
interests
of
the
students
22
and
shall
set
the
number
of
days
or
hours
of
required
23
attendance
for
the
school
year
as
provided
in
section
24
299.1,
subsection
2
,
but
the
board
of
directors
of
a
25
school
district
shall
hold
a
public
hearing
on
any
26
proposed
school
calendar
prior
to
adopting
the
school
27
calendar.
If
the
board
of
directors
of
a
district
or
28
the
authorities
in
charge
of
an
accredited
nonpublic
29
school
extends
the
school
calendar
because
inclement
30
weather
caused
the
school
district
or
accredited
31
nonpublic
school
to
temporarily
close
during
the
32
regular
school
calendar,
the
school
district
or
33
accredited
nonpublic
school
may
excuse
a
graduating
34
senior
who
has
met
district
or
school
requirements
for
35
graduation
from
attendance
during
the
extended
school
36
calendar.
A
school
corporation
may
begin
employment
37
of
personnel
for
in-service
training
and
development
38
purposes
before
the
date
to
begin
elementary
and
39
secondary
school.
