     1  1    Amend House File 589 as follows:
     1  2 #1.  Page 2, by inserting after line 23 the
     1  3 following:
     1  4    <Sec.    .  Section 262.9, subsection 26, Code
     1  5 2009, is amended to read as follows:
     1  6    26.  Explore, in conjunction with the department of
     1  7 education, the need for coordination between school
     1  8 districts, area education agencies, state board of
     1  9 regents institutions, and community colleges for
     1 10 purposes of delivery of courses, use of
     1 11 telecommunications, transportation, and other similar
     1 12 issues.  Coordination may include, but is not limited
     1 13 to, coordination of calendars, programs, schedules, or
     1 14 telecommunications emissions.  The state board shall
     1 15 develop recommendations as necessary, which shall be
     1 16 submitted in a report to the general assembly on a
     1 17 timely basis.  In order to coordinate with the school
     1 18 calendars established by school districts and
     1 19 accredited nonpublic schools in accordance with
     1 20 earliest school start date established pursuant to
     1 21 section 279.10, subsection 1, the fall semester
     1 22 established for the institutions of higher learning
     1 23 governed by the state board, and the school calendars
     1 24 established for the Iowa braille and sight saving
     1 25 school and the state school for the deaf shall begin
     1 26 no sooner than the fourth Monday in August.>
