     1  1    Amend House File 589 as follows:
     1  2 #1.  Page 1, by inserting before line 1 the
     1  3 following:
     1  4    <Section 1.  Section 256F.4, subsection 5, Code
     1  5 2009, is amended to read as follows:
     1  6    5.  A charter school shall provide instruction for
     1  7 at least the number of days hours required by section
     1  8 279.10, subsection 1, or shall provide at least the
     1  9 equivalent number of total hours.>
     1 10 #2.  Page 1, by striking lines 8 through 14 and
     1 11 inserting the following:  <section 279.10, subsection
     1 12 1, unless the school district maintains a year around
     1 13 school calendar.  However, this section does not apply
     1 14 to a school district that has received approval from
     1 15 the director of the department of education under
     1 16 section 279.10, subsection 4, to commence classes for
     1 17 regularly established elementary and secondary schools
     1 18 in advance of the starting date established in section
     1 19 279.10, subsection 1.>

     1 23 inserting the following:  <immediately precedes the
     1 24 first day of September.  School shall continue for at

     1 26 subsection 3, and may be maintained during the entire
     1 27 calendar year.  The minimum hours of instructional
     1 28 school time in a school year shall be nine hundred

     1 37 following:
     1 38    <Sec.    .  Section 299.1, unnumbered paragraph 1,
     1 39 Code 2009, is amended to read as follows:
     1 40    Except as provided in section 299.2, the parent,
     1 41 guardian, or legal or actual custodian of a child who
     1 42 is of compulsory attendance age, shall cause the child
     1 43 to attend some public school, an accredited nonpublic
     1 44 school, or competent private instruction in accordance
     1 45 with the provisions of chapter 299A, during a school
     1 46 year, as defined under section 279.10.  The board of
     1 47 directors of a public school district or the governing
     1 48 body of an accredited nonpublic school shall set the
     1 49 number of days hours of required attendance for the
     1 50 schools under its control.
