     1  1    Amend House File 589 as follows:
     1  2 #1.  Page 2, by inserting after line 23 the
     1  3 following:
     1  4    <Sec.    .  Section 260C.14, subsection 3, Code
     1  5 2009, is amended to read as follows:
     1  6    3.  Have the powers and duties with respect to
     1  7 community colleges, not otherwise provided in this
     1  8 chapter, which are prescribed for boards of directors
     1  9 of local school districts by chapter 279 except that
     1 10 the board of directors is not required to prohibit the
     1 11 use of tobacco and the use or possession of alcoholic
     1 12 liquor or beer by any student of legal age under the
     1 13 provisions of section 279.9.  The fall semester
     1 14 established by the board of directors for arts and
     1 15 sciences and vocational=technical coursework shall
     1 16 begin no sooner than the fourth Monday in August.>
