     1  2 #1.  Page 1, by inserting after line 5 the
     1  3 following:
     1  4    <BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That the President of the
     1  5 United States, George W. Bush, is urged to take swift
     1  6 action to remove Rod Paige from the position of United
     1  7 States Secretary of Education.>
     1  8 #2.  Page 1, line 7, by inserting after the word
     1  9 <States> the following:  <, the United States
     1 10 Secretary of Education, the President of the United
     1 11 States>.
     1 12 #3.  Title page 1, line 1, by inserting after the
     1 13 word <Resolution> the following:  <relating to
     1 14 marriage and education as the foundations of a healthy
     1 15 society by urging the removal of the United States
     1 16 Secretary of Education and by>.
     1 17 #4.  Title page 2, line 6, by inserting after the
     1 18 word <foundation;> the following:  <and
     1 19    WHEREAS, a strong education system is also
     1 20 essential to the foundation of a healthy society and
     1 21 government has a duty to protect the education system;
     1 22 and
     1 23    WHEREAS, the United States Secretary of Education
     1 24 is the leader for federal education policy issues; and
     1 25    WHEREAS, every State in the Union is in the middle
     1 26 of implementing one of the more far=reaching federal
     1 27 mandates designed to improve student achievement; and
     1 28    WHEREAS, the United States is a democracy that
     1 29 requires leadership to bring people with differing
     1 30 views together, rather than a government that works to
     1 31 divide its people; and
     1 32    WHEREAS, U.S. Secretary of Education Rod Paige
     1 33 recently alienated millions of educators and 2.7
     1 34 million teachers in the National Education Association
     1 35 by making inappropriate comments during a private
     1 36 meeting with governors at the White House; and
     1 37    WHEREAS, efforts to change the federal policies
     1 38 that impact the education of children in our public
     1 39 schools should not be considered an act of terrorism;
     1 40 and
     1 41    WHEREAS, a number of Representatives and Senators
     1 42 of the Iowa General Assembly are members of the
     1 43 National Education Association and are loyal to the
     1 44 principles of America's representative democracy; and
     1 45    WHEREAS, Secretary Rod Paige's apology to the
     1 46 members of the National Education Association failed
     1 47 to repudiate the content of his inappropriate
     1 48 comments; and
     1 49    WHEREAS, Secretary Rod Paige has repeatedly made
     1 50 inaccurate and unfair statements about Iowa's
     2  1 implementation of federal law regarding education
     2  2 policy;>
