The governor shall appoint the director of the department, subject to confirmation by the senate. The director shall serve at the pleasure of the governor. The director is exempt from the merit system provisions of chapter 8A, subchapter IV. The governor shall set the salary of the director within the range established by the general assembly.
The director shall possess education and experience in public health.
