The state board of education is established for the department. The state board consists of nine members appointed by the governor subject to senate confirmation. The members shall be qualified electors of the state and hold no other elective or appointive state office. A member shall not be engaged in professional education for a major portion of the member's time nor shall the member derive a major portion of income from any business or activity connected with education. Not more than five members shall be of the same political party.
The terms of office are for six years beginning and ending as provided in section 69.19.
Three of the state board members shall have substantial knowledge related to the community college system. The remaining six members shall be members of the general public.
