  1  2        BY  COMMITTEE ON RULES AND ADMINISTRATION
  1  3 A Resolution to recognize February 6 as Ronald
  1  4    Reagan Day in the State of Iowa.
  1  5    WHEREAS, President Ronald Wilson Reagan, a man of
  1  6 humble background, worked throughout his life serving
  1  7 freedom and advancing the public good, having been
  1  8 employed as an entertainer, union leader, corporate
  1  9 spokesman, Governor of California, and President of
  1 10 the United States; and
  1 11    WHEREAS, Ronald Reagan started his professional
  1 12 career working in both Davenport for WOC radio station
  1 13 and Des Moines for WHO radio station, and returned to
  1 14 Iowa during his Presidency with fond memories of his
  1 15 years spent living in Iowa; and
  1 16    WHEREAS, Ronald Reagan served with honor and
  1 17 distinction for two terms as the fortieth President of
  1 18 the United States of America, the second term of which
  1 19 he earned the confidence of sixty percent of the
  1 20 electorate and was victorious in forty-nine of the
  1 21 fifty states in the general election, a record
  1 22 unsurpassed in the history of American presidential
  1 23 elections; and
  1 24    WHEREAS, in 1981, when Ronald Reagan was
  1 25 inaugurated President, he inherited a disillusioned
  1 26 nation shackled by rampant inflation and high
  1 27 unemployment; and
  1 28    WHEREAS, during Mr. Reagan's presidency, he worked
  1 29 in a bipartisan manner to enact his bold agenda of
  1 30 restoring accountability and common sense to
  2  1 government which led to an unprecedented economic
  2  2 expansion and opportunity for millions of Americans;
  2  3 and
  2  4    WHEREAS, Mr. Reagan's commitment to an active
  2  5 social policy agenda for the nation's children helped
  2  6 lower crime and drug use in the nation's communities
  2  7 and neighborhoods; and
  2  8    WHEREAS, President Reagan's commitment to the
  2  9 nation's armed forces contributed to the restoration
  2 10 of pride in America, American values and those
  2 11 cherished by the free world, and prepared America's
  2 12 armed forces to win the Gulf War; and
  2 13    WHEREAS, President Reagan's vision of "peace
  2 14 through strength" led to the end of the Cold War and
  2 15 the ultimate demise of the Soviet Union, guaranteeing
  2 16 basic human rights for millions of people; and
  2 17    WHEREAS, on February 6, 2003, Ronald Reagan will
  2 18 have reached the age of ninety-two years; NOW
  2 19 THEREFORE,
  2 20    BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE, That the Iowa State
  2 21 Senate hereby recognizes February 6, 2003, and
  2 22 subsequent annual anniversaries of that date, as
  2 23 Ronald Reagan Day.
