PAG LIN 1 1 Section 1. Section 509A.13, Code 2003, is amended to read 1 2 as follows: 1 3 509A.13 CONTINUATION OF GROUP INSURANCE. 1 4 1. If a governing body, a county board of supervisors, or 1 5 a city council has procured for its employees accident, 1 6 health, or hospitalization insurance, or a medical service 1 7 plan, or has contracted with a health maintenance organization 1 8 authorized to do business in this state, the governing body, 1 9 county board of supervisors, or city council shall allow its 1 10 employees who retired before attaining sixty-five years of age 1 11 to continue participation in the group plan or under the group 1 12 contract at the employee's own expense until the employee 1 13 attains sixty-five years of age. 1 14This section applies to employees who retired on or after1 15January 1, 1981.1 16 2. Employees of the general assembly who have worked 1 17 through at least fifteen legislative sessions or more and who 1 18 retire after attaining age fifty-five but prior to attaining 1 19 age sixty-five shall be eligible to continue group health 1 20 benefits pursuant to the provisions of this section. 1 21 Sec. 2. APPLICABILITY. This Act applies to employees of 1 22 the general assembly who retire on or after July 1, 2003. 1 23 EXPLANATION 1 24 This bill amends Code section 509A.13, regarding 1 25 continuation of group insurance for public employees. The 1 26 bill amends the Code section to provide expressly for the 1 27 continuation of group insurance until age 65, at the 1 28 employee's expense, for legislative employees who retire at 1 29 age 55 after working at least 15 or more legislative sessions. 1 30 The bill contains an applicability provision that makes the 1 31 changes in Code section 509A.13 applicable to employees 1 32 retiring on or after July 1, 2003. 1 33 LSB 2167XS 80 1 34 jj/sh/8
