  1  1                HOUSE RESOLUTION NO. ___
  1  2                        BY  DRAKE
  1  3 A Resolution honoring Harlan Community Schools for
  1  4    their achievements in academics, music, vocational
  1  5    training, and sports.
  1  6    WHEREAS, Harlan Community Schools have recently
  1  7 excelled in numerous curricular and extracurricular
  1  8 activities, and have been recognized for significant
  1  9 achievements, especially in the area of academic
  1 10 performance; and
  1 11    WHEREAS, last year Harlan Community High School
  1 12 seniors averaged a score of 23.5 on ACT tests,
  1 13 exceeding both national and state averages, as has
  1 14 occurred for many years; and
  1 15    WHEREAS, the Annual Report on Iowa Student
  1 16 Achievement and Accountability prepared by the
  1 17 Department of Education for 2004 lists Harlan
  1 18 Community Schools as scoring among the top 5 percent
  1 19 of Iowa's fourth and eighth grade students in the
  1 20 areas of math and reading; and
  1 21    WHEREAS, the Harlan Community School Marching Band
  1 22 has received 22 consecutive number-one ratings at
  1 23 marching band contests; and
  1 24    WHEREAS, Harlan Community School Jazz Bands have
  1 25 never placed lower than fourth in state jazz contests
  1 26 over 30 years, including two first-place finishes; and
  1 27    WHEREAS, Harlan Community Schools have recently
  1 28 qualified four teams for the national Destination
  1 29 Imagination Contest in Knoxville, Tennessee; and
  1 30    WHEREAS, the Harlan Community Future Farmers of
  2  1 America (FFA) is the largest chapter in the state and
  2  2 this year is being recognized by the state FFA as the
  2  3 Outstanding FFA Chapter in Iowa; and
  2  4    WHEREAS, the Harlan Community High School Boys'
  2  5 Basketball Team won the 2004 Class 3A State
  2  6 Championship with a 27-0 record; and
  2  7    WHEREAS, seventh, eighth, and ninth grade, and
  2  8 reserve teams were all undefeated this basketball
  2  9 season; and
  2 10    WHEREAS, the Boys' Football Team won the 2003 Class
  2 11 3A State Championship with a 13-0 record, thus placing
  2 12 first or second for 17 years out of the last 30 years;
  2 13 and
  2 14    WHEREAS, the Boys' Track Team won the 2003 Class 3A
  2 15 State Championship; and
  2 16    WHEREAS, the Boys' Baseball Team won the 2003 Class
  2 17 3A State Championship with a 29-7 record; and
  2 18    WHEREAS, the boys' baseball, football, and
  2 19 basketball teams recorded 57 consecutive wins through
  2 20 their respective seasons; and
  2 21    WHEREAS, the students of Harlan Community School
  2 22 have demonstrated the kind of character and
  2 23 competitive spirit valued by their schools, their
  2 24 community, and the State of Iowa, NOW THEREFORE,
  2 25    BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES,
  2 26 That the House of Representatives congratulates the
  2 27 students, parents, teachers, and administrators of the
  2 28 Harlan Community Schools for their many achievements
  2 29 and thanks them for the honor and recognition they
  2 30 have brought to their school and to the State of Iowa;
  3  1 and
  3  2    BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That, upon adoption, an
  3  3 official copy of this Resolution be prepared for
  3  4 presentation to the Superintendent of the Harlan
  3  5 Community Schools for sharing with the entire Harlan
  3  6 community.
