1 3 A Resolution encouraging the adoption of the Iowa tartan
1 4 and the Iowa dress tartan as official state tartans.
1 5 WHEREAS, Tartan Day has been recognized and
1 6 celebrated on April 6 since 1999 to commemorate the
1 7 signing of the Declaration of Arbroath that inspired
1 8 the United States Declaration of Independence and to
1 9 recognize the contributions of the people of Scottish
1 10 and Scots-Irish heritage to the United States and
1 11 Iowa; and
1 12 WHEREAS, twenty states, the United States, all of
1 13 the Canadian provinces, some of the American military
1 14 forces, and several cities in the United States have
1 15 adopted their own tartan which can be worn by anyone
1 16 of any nationality, known as district tartans; and
1 17 WHEREAS, Iowa has a rich history of Scottish
1 18 influence in the founding of towns, cities, and
1 19 counties; and that history is reflected in place names
1 20 and celebrations throughout Iowa; and
1 21 WHEREAS, Iowans of Scottish and Scots-Irish descent
1 22 have shown leadership in the fields of science,
1 23 industry, literature, politics, exploration, and
1 24 conservation; and
1 25 WHEREAS, the Scottish community had input into the
1 26 creation of the Iowa tartan and Iowa dress tartan; and
1 27 WHEREAS, the colors chosen for the Iowa tartans
1 28 were chosen to symbolize Iowa: blue for the sky, our
1 29 rivers and lakes; green for the fields our farmers
1 30 plant; black for the rich soil with which we are
2 1 blessed; white for snow; red for barns and the state
2 2 flower, the wild rose; brown for the earth; and yellow
2 3 for corn and the state bird, the goldfinch; and
2 4 WHEREAS, the Iowa Scottish Heritage Society
2 5 initiated the creation of the state tartans as gifts
2 6 for all of the people of Iowa to symbolize the nature,
2 7 qualities, and beauty of Iowa and as a symbol of unity
2 8 and all that weaves us together as Iowans; NOW
2 9 THEREFORE,
2 10 BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES,
2 11 That the House of Representatives supports adoption of
2 12 designs submitted by the Iowa Scottish Heritage
2 13 Society as the official Iowa tartans; and
2 14 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That a copy of this
2 15 resolution be sent to the Governor requesting
2 16 executive approval of such tartans as the official
2 17 Iowa tartan and Iowa dress tartan.
