1 2 BY SCHICKEL
1 3 A Resolution honoring the City of Mason City on its
1 4 sesquicentennial year.
1 5 WHEREAS, the City of Mason City, first settled in
1 6 1853, is celebrating its 150th anniversary; and
1 7 WHEREAS, Mason City is the hometown of Meredith
1 8 Willson, composer of the Broadway musical "The Music
1 9 Man", and of his older sister Dixie Willson, writer
1 10 and poet, is the home of the Music Man Square, and is
1 11 the host of the annual North Iowa Band Festival; and
1 12 WHEREAS, Mason City is the home to one of the most
1 13 famous Prairie School residential developments
1 14 featuring three Frank Lloyd Wright structures
1 15 including the Park Inn Hotel, the last remaining hotel
1 16 designed by Frank Lloyd Wright in the world; and
1 17 WHEREAS, Mason City is the home of the Charles H.
1 18 MacNider Art Museum which holds one of the finest
1 19 American Art collections in the country, and the Mason
1 20 City Public Library, one of the most beautiful
1 21 libraries in the country, and is the hometown of Bil
1 22 Baird, the master puppeteer; and
1 23 WHEREAS, Mason City is the birthplace of Hanford
1 24 MacNider, a businessman and philanthropist who served
1 25 as assistant secretary of war, minister to Canada, and
1 26 is Iowa's most decorated soldier; and
1 27 WHEREAS, for almost 100 years, Mason City has been
1 28 a regional center for the production of cement,
1 29 employing local workers in a variety of locally,
1 30 nationally, and internationally owned businesses; and
2 1 WHEREAS, Mason City continues to contribute to the
2 2 culture, well-being, and prosperity of Iowa, the
2 3 nation, and the world; NOW THEREFORE,
2 4 BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES,
2 5 That the House of Representatives recognizes and
2 6 extends its congratulations to the City of Mason City
2 7 on its sesquicentennial anniversary year and for its
2 8 150 years of service to its citizens and to the State
2 9 of Iowa; and
2 10 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That, upon adoption, an
2 11 official copy of this Resolution be prepared and
2 12 presented to the Honorable Jean Marinos, Mayor of
2 13 Mason City.
