1 1 HOUSE RESOLUTION NO. ___
1 2 BY FOEGE, LENSING, MASCHER, and MYERS
1 3 A Resolution marking the restoration of the dome,
1 4 cupola, and bell of the Old Capitol building in Iowa
1 5 City and honoring the contractors, artisans, skilled
1 6 workers, and the many individuals contributing to the
1 7 effort to complete the restoration.
1 8 WHEREAS, the Old Capitol building has served as a
1 9 symbol of pride and excellence for the University of
1 10 Iowa, Iowa City, and the State of Iowa for more than
1 11 160 years and is listed in the National Register of
1 12 Historic Places; and
1 13 WHEREAS, the tragic destruction of the dome,
1 14 cupola, and bell of the Old Capitol in November 2001,
1 15 was felt in the hearts of citizens across Iowa who
1 16 called for the immediate restoration of the landmark;
1 17 and
1 18 WHEREAS, the restoration has replenished the cupola
1 19 and provided a new dome and bell to once again ring in
1 20 the start of classes for university students; and
1 21 WHEREAS, this continuing restoration of the Old
1 22 Capitol requires the recognition of those contractors,
1 23 artisans, skilled persons employed thereby, and the
1 24 multitude of individuals whose dedication and
1 25 considerable efforts have brought back the heart and
1 26 soul of the University of Iowa; and
1 27 WHEREAS, the complete restoration of the dome,
1 28 cupola, and bell tower of the Old Capitol building is
1 29 expected to be completed by May 2003; NOW THEREFORE,
1 30 BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES,
2 1 That the House of Representatives proudly marks the
2 2 celebrated restoration of the dome, cupola, and bell
2 3 at the Old Capitol in Iowa City; and
2 4 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That, upon adoption, the
2 5 Chief Clerk of the House of Representatives shall
2 6 prepare an official copy of this Resolution for
2 7 presentation to the Honorable Ernie Lehman, Mayor of
2 8 Iowa City, and the Honorable Dr. David Skorton,
2 9 President of the University of Iowa.
