1 1 Section 1. Section 321.463, Code 2003, is amended by
1 2 adding the following new subsection:
1 3 NEW SUBSECTION. 5A. Notwithstanding subsection 5,
1 4 paragraph "b", during the period beginning September 1 and
1 5 ending November 30, the maximum gross weight allowed to be
1 6 carried on a vehicle hauling crops, including corn, soybeans,
1 7 hay, straw, and stover, on noninterstate highways from the
1 8 point of harvest to a storage or distribution point is ninety
1 9 thousand pounds. However, weight embargoes on bridges shall
1 10 continue to apply.
1 11 EXPLANATION
1 12 This bill creates an exception to maximum gross weight
1 13 limits for vehicles hauling crops on noninterstate highways
1 14 from the point of harvest to a distribution or storage point
1 15 during the period of harvest from September 1 through November
1 16 30 annually. Current law establishes graduated weight limits
1 17 for vehicles or combinations of vehicles based on the number
1 18 of axles, with a maximum allowable gross weight of 80,000
1 19 pounds. The bill allows a maximum gross weight of 90,000
1 20 pounds, regardless of the number of axles, during the harvest
1 21 period.
1 22 Weight limitations on bridges are not affected by the bill.
