1 1 Section 1. Section 321.134, Code 2003, is amended by
1 2 adding the following new subsection:
1 3 NEW SUBSECTION. 5. The department shall waive the
1 4 penalties imposed by this section for an owner who, as a
1 5 member of the Iowa national guard or the reserve forces of the
1 6 United States, is ordered to active duty status. The waiver
1 7 shall apply during the period of activation and for thirty
1 8 days from the date the period of active military service ends,
1 9 according to rules adopted by the department.
1 10 EXPLANATION
1 11 This bill requires the state department of transportation
1 12 to waive penalties for overdue motor vehicle registration fees
1 13 if the motor vehicle owner is an Iowa national guard or United
1 14 States reserve forces member and is ordered to active duty
1 15 status. The penalty waiver applies for 30 days after the end
1 16 of the period of military activation.
