Senator from the Twelfth District, composed of the counties of Keokuk and Poweshiek, was born in Vermont, June 29, 1846, of American-born parents. Lived on the farm until he was nineteen years old, during which time he secured a common school education. While in Vermont he learned the carriage business and in 1876 moved to Grinnell, Iowa, where he has since resided. In 1876 he established the business, which has since grown to be the Spaulding Manufacturing Company, manufacturers of vehicles and automobiles; of which firm he is still the active head and senior member. He has been councilman and mayor of the city of Grinnell, and is at the present time a trustee of Grinnell College and president of the Citizens National Bank of Grinnell. Elected Senator in 1910. A Republican in politics.
