The senatorial district comprising Black Hawk and Grundy counties sends to the senate for the Twenty-seventh General Assembly, a prominent lawyer and citizen of Waterloo, the Hon. Charles W. Mullan. Mr. Mullan has been an effective worker in republican ranks of Iowa for many years, and deserves this recognition of his faithfulness and loyalty to the party. He was born in Wayne county, Illinois. He came to Iowa fifty years ago and has identified himself with the progress of the state during the half century of residence. He was married to Miss Emma L. Hammond, November 6, 1872. To them have been born four children, Charles H., Prances G., Alice M. and Alfred W. With his family Senator Mullan attends the Congregational church. In secret organizations he is particularly well represented, belonging to the Knight Templar, G A. R., Shriner and Elk lodges. He served his country as a private in the army, enlisting in Company D., Forty-seventh Iowa infantry, June 6, 1864, and was honorably discharged in October, 1864. He received his preliminary education in the public schools, with a thorough course at the Upper Iowa university, at Fayette. He was admitted to the practice of law in 1870 and has been in continuous practice in Waterloo ever since. He has, by reason of his capability as a lawyer, been honored with the highest legal offices of the county and city. He held the office of city solicitor of Waterloo six years; county attorney of Black Hawk county six years, and member of the school board nine years. He will be a valuable acquisition in legislative circles this winter with his years of professional and business experience.
