Senator from sixteenth district, composed of Adair and Madison counties, was born in Jackson county, Iowa, October 31, 1870. His parents moved to a farm in Madison county in 1886. Began teaching school in 1892 between farm seasons. Was county school superintendent 1897 to 1900. In 1899 entered the publishing business as publisher of the Winterset Madisonian, in which business he is still engaged. Was postmaster at Winterset, from April, 1904, to August, 1908. Attended the Dexter Normal college, and Drake university. Married Evalyn Crossley, of Patterson, Iowa, on June 1, 1898; they have four children. Is a member of the Presbyterian church, Knights of Pythias, Des Moines Consistory of Scottish Rite Mason, Za-Ga-Zig Temple Mystic Shrine. A republican in politics.
