MEYER , THOMPSON , MOMMSEN , SORENSEN , CARLSON , BERGAN , OSMUNDSON , HITE , KERR , HEIN , JENEARY , MOORE , DOLECHECK , BAXTER , WORTHAN , and RUNNING-MARQUARDT A Concurrent Resolution honoring the memory of Harold 1 Keller as one of the Marines who raised the United 2 States flag at Iwo Jima. 3 WHEREAS, Harold Keller, born and raised in Brooklyn, 4 Iowa, enlisted in the United States Marines following 5 the attack on Pearl Harbor and the United States 6 entrance into World War II; and 7 WHEREAS, Corporal Harold Keller served and fought as 8 a Marine in several battles during the Allied offensive 9 in the Pacific; and 10 WHEREAS, Corporal Keller was a part of the force 11 that landed and fought on Iwo Jima, one of the fiercest 12 and bloodiest battles of the Pacific theater; and 13 WHEREAS, on February 23, 1945, photographer Joe 14 Rosenthal captured the image of six Marines raising the 15 United States flag on Mount Suribachi indicating the 16 Allies had won the battle of Iwo Jima; and 17 WHEREAS, the iconic photograph of Marines raising 18 the United States flag at Iwo Jima became a powerful 19 symbol of the determination of all who served and 20 -1- LSB 5188YH (2) 88 ec/rn 1/ 2
H.C.R. 106 fought in the Pacific theater, and in all theaters of 21 war, during World War II; and 22 WHEREAS, recent historical research has determined 23 that one of the Marines in that iconic photograph was 24 Corporal Keller; NOW THEREFORE, 25 BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES, THE 26 SENATE CONCURRING, That the General Assembly recognizes 27 and honors the memory of Harold Keller as one of the 28 six United States Marines who raised the United States 1 flag atop Mount Suribachi during the battle of Iwo Jima 2 in World War II. 3 -2- LSB 5188YH (2) 88 ec/rn 2/ 2
