Senate Resolution 24 - Introduced SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 24 BY DVORSKY , BOLKCOM , KINNEY , QUIRMBACH , HOGG , MATHIS , BOWMAN , SCHOENJAHN , COURTNEY , BEHN , BISIGNANO , HORN , DEARDEN , DANIELSON , KAPUCIAN , RAGAN , DOTZLER , SENG , WILHELM , TAYLOR , GRONSTAL , JOCHUM , McCOY , SODDERS , BRASE , HART , ALLEN , and PETERSEN A Resolution honoring Dr. Sally Mason and her 1 outstanding achievements as President of the 2 University of Iowa. 3 WHEREAS, in 2007, Dr. Mason was appointed the 20th 4 President of the University of Iowa after a remarkable 5 academic career as a researcher, professor, department 6 chair, dean, and provost at several other leading 7 Midwest universities; and 8 WHEREAS, in the following eight years, President 9 Mason has demonstrated exceptional resolve in leading 10 the University of Iowa through a devastating flood and 11 economic recession; and 12 WHEREAS, President Mason has provided national 13 leadership as a member of many prestigious 14 organizations including as Chair of the Association of 15 Public and Land-Grant Universities Board of Directors 16 and as Chair of the Big Ten Council of Presidents and 17 Chancellors; and 18 WHEREAS, President Mason has furthered the 19 development of the University of Iowa as a world-class 20 institution through many notable achievements 21 including: 22 1. Increased enrollment to 31,387 students in 2014. 23 2. Enhanced student success as indicated by 24 -1- LSB 2181XS (2) 86 ns/rj 1/ 3
S.R. 24 increased freshman retention rates, increased 1 four-year graduation rates, and increased 2 employment-after-graduation rates. 3 3. Prioritized student access to education by 4 offering debt counseling, expanding free tutoring 5 services, implementing a six-point plan to combat 6 sexual assault, expanding partnership agreements with 7 Iowa community colleges, enhancing distant learning 8 programs, providing free summer courses through Summer 9 Hawk Tuition Grants, and implementing programs to 10 assist first-generation and under-represented students. 11 4. Reinvigorated campus infrastructure by 12 overseeing the completion of more than 25 projects 13 including a state-of-the-art learning commons, the 14 Pappajohn Biomedical Discovery Building, the College of 15 Public Health Building, and the Campus Recreation and 16 Wellness Center. 17 5. Initiated new campus construction projects 18 which are not yet completed, including the Hancher 19 Auditorium replacement, the Art Building replacement, 20 the Mary Louise Petersen Residence Hall, the Voxman 21 Music Building, and the University of Iowa Children’s 22 Hospital; NOW THEREFORE, 23 BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE, That the Senate 24 expresses its sincere gratitude to President Sally 25 Mason for her years of service to the University of 26 Iowa and to the people of Iowa and honors her effort, 27 leadership, and outstanding achievements in improving 28 the University of Iowa during her tenure; and 29 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That a copy of this 30 -2- LSB 2181XS (2) 86 ns/rj 2/ 3
