Resolution
recognizing
March
as
Fibromuscular

Dysplasia
Awareness
Month
in
Iowa.

WHEREAS,
fibromuscular
dysplasia
(FMD)
is
a
disease
3
that
causes
abnormal
cell
growth
of
the
arterial
wall
4
and
can
lead
to
areas
of
narrowing,
beading,
aneurysms,
5
and
dissections
of
the
arterial
wall;
and
6
WHEREAS,
until
recently
there
has
been
very
little
7
progress
in
understanding
this
disease
and
there
are
no
8
set
protocols
to
treat
the
disease;
and
9
WHEREAS,
FMD
has
always
been
considered
and
is
still
10
classified
as
a
rare
disease,
with
many
researchers
now
11
believing
that
FMD
is
an
underdiagnosed
disease;
and
12
WHEREAS,
some
data
suggests
4
to
5
percent
of
the
13
population
is
affected
by
the
disease;
and
14
WHEREAS,
90
percent
of
the
patients
affected
by
FMD
15
are
women,
but
men
and
children
can
also
develop
the
16
disease;
and
17
WHEREAS,
there
are
different
classifications
of
FMD,
18
with
the
two
most
common
types
being
medial
fibroplasia
19
and
intimal
fibroplasia;
and
20
WHEREAS,
unlike
adults,
children
tend
to
be
21
diagnosed
with
intimal
fibroplasia,
which
can
be
more
22
aggressive;
and
23
WHEREAS,
individuals
and
families
affected
by
FMD
24
often
experience
problems
such
as
a
sense
of
isolation,
25
difficulty
in
obtaining
an
accurate
and
timely
26
diagnosis,
and
less
than
optimal
treatment
options;
and
27
WHEREAS,
unlike
many
rare
diseases
that
are

relatively
well
known,
FMD
is
not
well
known
by
the
1
public
or
the
medical
community
and
patients
and
their
2
families
bear
a
large
share
of
the
burden
for
educating
3
the
public
and
their
own
physicians
and
raising
funds
4
for
awareness
and
research;
and
5
WHEREAS,
the
Fibromuscular
Dysplasia
Society
of
6
America
(FMDSA)
was
founded
in
March
2003,
and
has
been
7
active
and
successful
with
many
programs
including
8
public
and
physician
awareness,
patient
support,
and
9
engaging
and
working
with
researchers
from
around
the
10
world;
and
11
WHEREAS,
FMDSA
is
funding
the
United
States
Registry
12
for
Fibromuscular
Dysplasia;
and
13
WHEREAS,
recent
data
has
shown
the
inaccuracy
of
14
the
belief
that
75
percent
of
FMD
cases
affect
renal
15
arteries
and
more
recent
data
has
shown
it
is
very
16
common
to
have
a
five-year
delay
from
the
onset
of
17
symptoms
to
a
diagnosis;
and
18
WHEREAS,
greater
awareness
and
research
of
the
19
disease
is
still
needed
as
FMD
patients
present
with
20
the
same
symptoms
as
much
of
the
general
population
21
such
as
hypertension,
headaches,
dizziness,
stroke,
22
dissection
of
an
artery,
aneurysm,
swooshing
noise
in
23
the
ear,
and
renal
infarction,
and
children
can
present
24
with
basic
symptoms
such
as
high
blood
pressure,
25
headaches,
insomnia,
fatigue,
and
abdominal
pain;
and
26
WHEREAS,
the
misdiagnosis
of
FMD
can
lead
to
severe
27
consequences
and
disability;
and
28
WHEREAS,
FMDSA
is
organizing
a
global
observance
29
of
fibromuscular
dysplasia
during
the
month
of
March

each
year
when
patients,
medical
professionals,
and
1
researchers
shall
join
together
to
focus
attention
on
2
fibromuscular
dysplasia
as
a
public
health
issue;
NOW
3
THEREFORE,
4
BE
IT
RESOLVED
BY
THE
SENATE,
That
the
Senate
5
recognizes
the
month
of
March
as
Fibromuscular
6
Dysplasia
Awareness
Month
and
invites
the
citizens
7
of
Iowa
to
educate
themselves
and
others
with
regard
8
to
the
diagnosis,
treatment,
and
support
of
persons
9
affected
by
fibromuscular
dysplasia.
