Resolution
recognizing
the
importance
of
soils
to

Iowa’s
future
prosperity
and
healthy
environment.

WHEREAS,
soils
are
a
preeminent
natural
resource
3
that
supports
major
economic
sectors
of
our
state,
4
including
agriculture,
energy,
forestry,
and
5
recreation;
and
6
WHEREAS,
healthy
soils
filter,
store,
and
cycle
7
nutrients,
support
biological
activity
and
diversity,
8
and
filter,
buffer,
degrade,
and
immobilize
organic
and
9
inorganic
contaminants;
and
10
WHEREAS,
soil
management
is
closely
linked
to
the
11
quality
of
our
subsurface
and
surface
waters,
including
12
groundwater
sources,
lakes,
ponds,
streams,
and
13
rivers;
and
14
WHEREAS,
soil
is
a
vital
ecosystem
that
provides
15
keys
to
scientific
advances
that
directly
affect
human
16
health
such
as
the
development
of
new
medicines
and
17
technologies;
and
18
WHEREAS,
soils
are
renewable
only
on
the
scale
of
19
geologic
time;
and
20
WHEREAS,
Iowa’s
future
prosperity
and
well-being
21
depend
upon
this
precious
resource;
and
22
WHEREAS,
the
Soil
Science
Society
of
America
and
23
many
other
organizations
are
celebrating
the
2015
24
International
Year
of
Soils;
NOW
THEREFORE,

BE
IT
RESOLVED
BY
THE
HOUSE
OF
REPRESENTATIVES,
