Section
1.
Section
256.7,
Code
2016,
is
amended
by
adding
1
the
following
new
subsection:
2
NEW
SUBSECTION
.
33.
Adopt,
for
the
school
year
beginning
3
July
1,
2016,
and
each
succeeding
school
year,
for
statewide
4
use
by
school
districts
and
accredited
nonpublic
schools,
the
5
Iowa
core
kindergarten
through
grade
twelve
science
standards
6
utilized
by
school
districts
in
this
state
during
the
2014-2015
7
school
year
pursuant
to
section
280.3.
The
state
board
shall
8
submit
future
revisions
to
the
Iowa
core
science
standards
9
to
the
general
assembly
for
approval,
modification,
or
10
rejection,
and
the
state
board
shall
not
adopt
such
revisions
11
unless
specifically
authorized
by
a
constitutional
majority
12
of
each
house
of
the
general
assembly
and
approved
by
the
13
governor.
The
state
board
shall
not
adopt,
approve,
or
permit
14
implementation
by
school
districts
of
the
next
generation
15
science
standards.

EXPLANATION
17
The
inclusion
of
this
explanation
does
not
constitute
agreement
with
18
the
explanation’s
substance
by
the
members
of
the
general
assembly.

This
bill
directs
the
state
board
of
education
to
adopt
for
20
statewide
use
by
school
districts
and
accredited
nonpublic
21
schools,
for
the
school
year
beginning
July
1,
2016,
and
each
22
succeeding
school
year,
the
Iowa
core
kindergarten
through
23
grade
12
science
standards
utilized
by
school
districts
in
this
24
state
during
the
2014-2015
school
year.
25
Further,
the
bill
prohibits
the
state
board
from
adopting
26
any
future
revision
to
the
Iowa
core
science
standards
unless
27
specifically
authorized
by
a
constitutional
majority
of
each
28
house
of
the
general
assembly
and
approved
by
the
governor;
29
and
from
adopting,
approving,
or
permitting
implementation
by
30
school
districts
of
the
next
generation
science
standards.
The
31
state
board
adopted
the
next
generation
science
standards
with
32
some
modifications
on
August
6,
2015.
