Senate Resolution 10 - Introduced SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 10 BY JOHNSON and HART A Resolution honoring the life and work of Pope 1 Emeritus Benedict XVI. 2 WHEREAS, Benedict XVI is now pope emeritus of the 3 Roman Catholic Church, serving as the 265th pope from 4 2005 to 2013; and 5 WHEREAS, Joseph Aloisius Ratzinger, born in 1927 6 to a pious German family, was ordained as a priest in 7 1951; and 8 WHEREAS, following a distinguished career spanning 9 five decades, rather than taking the comfort of a 10 well-earned retirement, Cardinal Ratzinger was called 11 for higher service when he was elected pontiff of the 12 Roman Catholic Church; and 13 WHEREAS, taking the name Benedict XVI, he became 14 the spiritual leader of the world’s 1.2 billion Roman 15 Catholics; and 16 WHEREAS, Pope Benedict XVI during his tenure was 17 a tireless advocate for social justice, speaking for 18 those whose voices would not have been heard otherwise, 19 and a proponent of religious freedom, tolerance, and 20 cooperation, deepening ties with many religions; and 21 WHEREAS, also known as an academic, scholar, and 22 teacher, Pope Benedict XVI is a prolific writer, having 23 written 66 books throughout his life; he also has 24 authored numerous articles and established a journal 25 devoted to theology, and he oversaw the preparation 26 of the new Catechism of the Catholic Church; NOW 27 THEREFORE, 28 -1- LSB 2510SS (5) 85 jr/sc 1/ 2
S.R. 10 BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE, That the Senate honors 1 the life and good works of Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI 2 and wishes him a long and peaceful retirement; and 3 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That the Secretary of the 4 Senate is directed to provide a copy of this Resolution 5 to Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI. 6 -2- LSB 2510SS (5) 85 jr/sc 2/ 2
