House Resolution 28 - Introduced HOUSE RESOLUTION NO. 28 BY GARRETT A Resolution designating March 2013 as Iowa Women’s 1 History Month. 2 WHEREAS, Iowa women of every race, class, and 3 ethnic background have made historic contributions 4 to the growth and strength of our state and nation 5 in countless recorded and unrecorded ways, including 6 through the struggle for women’s rights; and 7 WHEREAS, Iowa women have played and continue to 8 play a critical economic, cultural, and social role by 9 constituting a significant portion of the labor force 10 working inside and outside of the home; and 11 WHEREAS, Iowa women were particularly important in 12 the establishment of early charitable, philanthropic, 13 and cultural institutions in our state and nation; and 14 WHEREAS, Iowa women and men amended the Iowa 15 Constitution to read that “All men and women are, by 16 nature, free and equal, and have certain inalienable 17 rights...”; and 18 WHEREAS, Iowa women have been leaders in 19 agriculture, business, and industry, as well as in the 20 abolitionist movement, the emancipation movement, the 21 labor movement, the civil rights movement, and the 22 woman suffrage movement, which create a more fair and 23 just society for all; and 24 WHEREAS, despite these contributions, and those of 25 women throughout the world, the role of women has been 26 undervalued, in the literature, teaching, and study of 27 history; NOW THEREFORE, 28 -1- LSB 2499HH (3) 85 jr/rj 1/ 2
H.R. 28 BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES, That 1 the House of Representatives designates the month of 2 March 2013 as Iowa Women’s History Month and invites 3 the citizens of Iowa to continue to uncover the roles 4 women have played throughout history. 5 -2- LSB 2499HH (3) 85 jr/rj 2/ 2
