H.F. 373 Section 1. Section 148A.6, Code 2013, is amended by adding 1 the following new subsection: 2 NEW SUBSECTION . 4. Notwithstanding subsection 1, upon the 3 referral and under the direction of a physician licensed under 4 chapter 148, a physical therapy assistant may provide physical 5 therapy evaluation and treatment. When a physical therapy 6 assistant provides care under such referral and direction, the 7 records of the patient’s condition and progress along with any 8 records of instruction for treatment shall be maintained by the 9 physical therapy assistant’s employer and a copy forwarded to 10 the referring physician. 11 Sec. 2. RULES. The board of physical and occupational 12 therapy, after consultation with the board of medicine, shall 13 adopt rules pursuant to its authority in section 148A.6, 14 subsection 1, to implement and administer this Act. 15 EXPLANATION 16 This bill relates to the practice of physical therapy 17 assistants. 18 The bill allows a physical therapy assistant to provide 19 physical therapy evaluation and treatment upon the referral and 20 under the direction of a licensed physician. Records regarding 21 care of a patient receiving evaluation or treatment by a 22 physical therapy assistant shall be maintained by the physical 23 therapy assistant’s employer and a copy shall also be forwarded 24 to the referring physician. 25 The bill requires the board of physical and occupational 26 therapy, after consultation with the board of medicine, to 27 adopt rules to implement and administer this Act. 28 -1- LSB 2348YH (2) 85 ad/sc 1/ 1
