Resolution
supporting
trapshooting
as
a
sanctioned

high
school
sport.

WHEREAS,
trapshooting
is
one
of
the
three
major
3
forms
of
competitive
clay
pigeon
shooting
and
is
4
growing
in
popularity
throughout
the
United
States
and
5
Iowa;
and
6
WHEREAS,
trapshooting
games
were
originally
meant
7
for
hunters
to
develop
their
hunting
skills,
but
have
8
obtained
international
recognition
and
are
encouraged
9
by
sports
associations;
and
10
WHEREAS,
trapshooting
is
considered
to
be
an
11
exciting
and
challenging
sport
in
which
many
people,
12
young
and
old,
male
and
female,
of
all
abilities,
13
compete
in
trapshooting
events;
and
14
WHEREAS,
trapshooting
has
been
a
sport
since
at
15
least
1793,
when
real
birds
were
used,
with
clay
16
targets
being
introduced
in
the
1880s;
and
17
WHEREAS,
Olympic
trap
is
one
of
the
International
18
Shooting
Sport
Federation
shooting
events,
introduced
19
to
the
Olympic
program
in
1900,
while
the
current
20
version
of
the
sport
was
introduced
in
1950;
and
21
WHEREAS,
the
Iowa
State
Trapshooting
Association
22
annually
sponsors
a
five-day
statewide
shooting
23
event;
and
24
WHEREAS,
trapshooting
competitions
promote
tourism
25
in
Iowa
by
bringing
in
participants
and
their
families
26
from
around
the
country
to
stay
in
motels,
eat
in
27
restaurants,
shop
in
retail
stores,
and
purchase

products
from
vendors
at
events;
and
1
WHEREAS,
a
great
deal
of
coordination
and
discipline
2
is
needed
for
trapshooting,
trapshooting
tests
a
3
player’s
skills
in
marksmanship
and
strategy
and
4
improves
the
confidence
of
youth
who
may
not
possess
5
the
physical
attributes
to
compete
in
other
competitive
6
sports
offered
at
their
schools;
and
7
WHEREAS,
the
goal
of
any
program
of
youth
8
trapshooting
should
be
to
provide
instruction
and
9
promote
gun
safety,
personal
responsibility,
and
10
sportsmanship
among
primary
and
secondary
students;
and
11
WHEREAS,
many
state
organizations
award
scholarships
12
to
college-bound
trapshooters
based
on
citizenship,
13
scholarship,
and
need,
and
many
youth
trapshooters
14
are
now
attending
college
with
the
help
of
those
15
scholarships;
and
16
WHEREAS,
our
youth
should
have
the
opportunity
and
17
be
encouraged
to
participate
in
trapshooting
in
the
18
same
manner
as
other
youth
extracurricular
activities,
19
including
football,
baseball,
softball,
basketball,
20
track,
scouting,
and
band;
NOW
THEREFORE,
21
BE
IT
RESOLVED
BY
THE
HOUSE
OF
REPRESENTATIVES,
That
22
the
House
of
Representatives
encourages
the
school
23
boards
of
every
school
district
in
the
state
of
Iowa,
24
in
conjunction
with
public
and
private
groups,
to
25
voluntarily
promote
and
include
trapshooting
as
a
high
26
school
sport
for
the
youth
of
our
state;
and
27
BE
IT
FURTHER
RESOLVED,
That
a
copy
of
this
28
resolution
be
sent
to
the
Director
of
the
Department
of
29
Education,
the
Director
of
the
Department
of
Natural
