H.F. 102 Section 1. Section 321.34, subsection 10, Code 2011, is 1 amended by adding the following new paragraph: 2 NEW PARAGRAPH . e. The surviving spouse of a retired member 3 of a paid or volunteer fire department who was issued special 4 plates under this subsection may continue to use or apply for 5 and use the special plates subject to registration of the 6 special plates in the surviving spouse’s name and upon payment 7 of the regular annual registration fee for the vehicle. If the 8 surviving spouse remarries, the surviving spouse shall return 9 the special plates to the department and the department shall 10 issue regular registration plates to the surviving spouse. 11 EXPLANATION 12 Under current law, a person who is a current or retired 13 member of a paid or volunteer fire department may apply for 14 special fire fighter motor vehicle registration plates. There 15 is a one-time fee of $25 for issuance of the plates, which is 16 credited to the Paul Ryan memorial fire fighter safety training 17 fund. Fire fighter plates are renewed upon payment of the 18 regular annual registration fee for the vehicle. 19 This bill allows the surviving spouse of a retired fire 20 fighter who was issued special fire fighter registration plates 21 to continue to use or apply for and use the plates, registering 22 them in the surviving spouse’s name. Renewal of the plates 23 is subject to payment of the regular registration fee for the 24 vehicle.
