  1  1                SENATE RESOLUTION NO.    
  1  2                        BY  McCOY
  1  3 A Resolution honoring Rich Eychaner for over three
  1  4    decades of public service.
  1  5    WHEREAS, Rich Eychaner has been an advocate for
  1  6 human rights in central Iowa for over 30 years; and
  1  7    WHEREAS, Rich Eychaner has been a successful
  1  8 businessman, community leader, and a political and
  1  9 social activist who has added philanthropist to his
  1 10 list of outstanding avocations; and
  1 11    WHEREAS, Rich Eychaner created the Eychaner
  1 12 Foundation to promote tolerance and nondiscrimination;
  1 13 and
  1 14    WHEREAS, the Eychaner Foundation is dedicated to
  1 15 providing college financial aid to lesbian, gay,
  1 16 bisexual, and transgender Iowa high school students;
  1 17 and
  1 18    WHEREAS, the Foundation, through Iowa's Matthew
  1 19 Shepard Scholarship Program and the Howard and Mildred
  1 20 Eychaner Scholarship, has committed over $1 million in
  1 21 scholarship assistance to students who have
  1 22 demonstrated moral and ethical leadership; and
  1 23    WHEREAS, 2009 is the 10th anniversary of the
  1 24 Matthew Shepard Scholarship, which is awarded annually
  1 25 to three or more openly gay or lesbian high school
  1 26 seniors, covering full tuition, books, and fees at one
  1 27 of Iowa's three state universities, for up to four
  1 28 years; and
  1 29    WHEREAS, scholarship recipients have been residents
  1 30 of 53 Iowa House Districts and 38 Iowa Senate
  2  1 Districts; and
  2  2    WHEREAS, Rich Eychaner is a recipient of numerous
  2  3 awards for his lifetime of public service, including
  2  4 the Friends of Iowa Civil Rights Individual Award for
  2  5 his work as a civil rights activist in Iowa; the Power
  2  6 of One Award, presented in 2007 by the PFund, a
  2  7 Minnesota lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender
  2  8 foundation; and Activist of the Year presented in 2003
  2  9 by Cityview, an independent newspaper in Central Iowa;
  2 10 and
  2 11    WHEREAS, Rich Eychaner was nominated by Governor
  2 12 Culver and approved by the Senate to be a member of
  2 13 the Iowa Civil Rights Commission that fights
  2 14 discrimination across Iowa; NOW THEREFORE,
  2 15    BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE, That the Senate
  2 16 honors Rich Eychaner for over three decades of
  2 17 championing human rights for all persons.
