Senate Resolution 104 - Introduced SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 104 BY BEALL , BLACK , BOETTGER , FRAISE , and SEYMOUR A Resolution to honor the historical, political, 1 cultural, social, and economic relationship among 2 Canada, the United States, and Iowa and recognizing 3 February 17, 2010, as Canada Day at the Statehouse. 4 WHEREAS, Canada and the United States share not 5 only a 5,500-mile border, which is the world’s longest 6 secure border, but also a common history, heritage, 7 and destiny based on shared ideals and democratic 8 principles; and 9 WHEREAS, relations between Canada and the United 10 States span more than two centuries, and the two 11 countries have developed one of the most successful 12 international relationships in the modern world; and 13 WHEREAS, for over 100 years Canada and the United 14 States have stood together as allies and defense 15 partners, fighting tyranny and terrorism in a 16 partnership that remains resolute even today; and 17 WHEREAS, the United States is Canada’s largest 18 export market, with the United States importing $343 19 billion in goods from Canada while exporting $262 20 billion in goods to Canada; and 21 WHEREAS, the relationship between Canada and Iowa is 22 equally strong, combining a complex and growing network 23 of social, economic, and even familial ties; and 24 WHEREAS, it is estimated that 78,000 jobs in Iowa 25 are supported by Canada-United States trade; and 26 WHEREAS, Canada is Iowa’s top export market, with 27 Iowa exports to Canada valued at $3.5 billion and Iowa 28 -1- LSB 6196SS (14) 83 jr/rj 1/ 2

S.R. 104 imports from Canada valued at $4.2 billion; and 1 WHEREAS, Iowa exports to Canada include steel 2 products, oilseed cake and meal, organic chemicals, 3 air conditioning and refrigeration units, and 4 tractors, while Iowa imports include natural gas, oils, 5 fertilizers, live animals, and steel products; NOW 6 THEREFORE, 7 BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE, That the Senate 8 honors the relationships between the peoples and the 9 governments of Canada, the United States, and Iowa, 10 allies in war, friends and neighbors in peace, and 11 partners in economic prosperity; and 12 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That in honor of our strong 13 and growing relationship, the Senate recognizes 14 February 17, 2010, as Canada Day at the Iowa 15 Statehouse. 16 -2- LSB 6196SS (14) 83 jr/rj 2/ 2
