H.F. 2036 Section 1. Section 153.38, Code 2009, is amended to read as 1 follows: 2 153.38 Dental assistants —— scope of practice. 3 A registered dental assistant may perform those services of 4 assistance to a licensed dentist . Such services include the 5 placement of sealants, the removal of supragingival plaque, 6 stains, or hard natural or synthetic materials, and other 7 services as determined by the board by rule. Such services 8 shall be performed under supervision of a licensed dentist in 9 a dental office, a public or private school, public health 10 agencies, hospitals, and the armed forces, but shall not be 11 construed to authorize a dental assistant to practice dentistry 12 or dental hygiene. Every licensed dentist who utilizes the 13 services of a registered dental assistant for the purpose of 14 assistance in the practice of dentistry shall be responsible 15 for acts delegated to the registered dental assistant. A 16 dentist shall delegate to a registered dental assistant only 17 those acts which are authorized to be delegated to registered 18 dental assistants in this section and by the board. 19 EXPLANATION 20 Code section 153.38 currently provides that the dental 21 board determines the services that may be performed by a 22 dental assistant. This bill specifies that the placement of 23 sealants, and the removal of supragingival plaque, stains, or 24 hard natural or synthetic materials are services that may be 25 provided by an assistant.
