Senate Resolution 143 - Introduced PAG LIN S.R. ________ H.R. ________ 1 1 SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 1 2 BY ANGELO, WIECK, ZIEMAN, KETTERING, BOETTGER, 1 3 WARD, MULDER, JOHNSON, ZAUN, McKINLEY, NOBLE, 1 4 PUTNEY, GASKILL, LUNDBY, HOUSER, SEYMOUR, WOOD, 1 5 HECKROTH, RIELLY, SCHOENJAHN, OLIVE, KREIMAN, 1 6 STEWART, QUIRMBACH, WARNSTADT, RAGAN, BOLKCOM, 1 7 FRAISE, DOTZLER, HATCH, DVORSKY, CONNOLLY, SENG, 1 8 APPEL, HOGG, DEARDEN, GRONSTAL, COURTNEY, 1 9 HANCOCK, KIBBIE, DANIELSON, SCHMITZ, and HORN 1 10 A Resolution recognizing and honoring Iowa's Olympic 1 11 athletes. 1 12 WHEREAS, the tradition of the Olympic games was 1 13 revived in 1896 in Athens, Greece, with 14 nations 1 14 participating in 43 events; and 1 15 WHEREAS, 112 years later the Olympics includes 35 1 16 sports, nearly 400 events, and thousands of athletes; 1 17 and 1 18 WHEREAS, Iowa has a long and proud Olympic 1 19 tradition, including many gold medal winners; and 1 20 WHEREAS, in 2008, Iowa will be represented by the 1 21 following nine athletes, serving as principal 1 22 competitors or as alternates, competing in five 1 23 Olympic sports: 1 24 Haley Dunn, from Eddyville, competing in skeet 1 25 shooting; Lee Fullhart, from Hesper, competing in 1 26 wrestling; Kirk Hinrich, from Sioux City, competing in 1 27 basketball; Shawn Johnson, from West Des Moines, 1 28 competing in gymnastics; Lolo Jones, from West Des 1 29 Moines, competing in track and field; Sara McMann, 1 30 from Iowa City, competing in wrestling; Doug Schwab, 2 1 from Osage, competing in wrestling; Tolly Thompson, 2 2 from Janesville, competing in wrestling; Joe Williams, 2 3 from Iowa City, competing in wrestling; and Joey 2 4 Woody, from Iowa City, competing in track and field; 2 5 NOW THEREFORE, 2 6 BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE, That the Senate 2 7 honors these young Iowans, whose efforts bring honor 2 8 not only to themselves, but also to their communities 2 9 and all Iowa, and wishes them the best of luck in the 2 10 XXIX Olympiad. 2 11 LSB 6656SS 82 2 12 jr/rj/8
