  1  2       BY  DEARDEN, APPEL, BEALL, BLACK, BOLKCOM,
  1  3    CONNOLLY, COURTNEY, DANIELSON, DOTZLER, DVORSKY,
  1  4    FRAISE, GRONSTAL, HANCOCK, HATCH, HECKROTH, HOGG,
  1  5     HORN, KIBBIE, KREIMAN, McCOY, OLIVE, QUIRMBACH,
  1  6   RAGAN, RIELLY, SCHMITZ, SCHOENJAHN, SENG, STEWART,
  1  7                   WARNSTADT, and WOOD
  1  8 A Resolution honoring the work and life achievements
  1  9    of retiring Iowa Federation of Labor President,
  1 10    Mark L. Smith.
  1 11    WHEREAS, Mark Smith has served the Iowa labor
  1 12 movement and the cause of worker education and
  1 13 economic justice for over 30 years as a labor educator
  1 14 at the University of Iowa, and as Secretary=Treasurer
  1 15 and then President of the Iowa Federation of Labor,
  1 16 AFL=CIO; and
  1 17    WHEREAS, Mr. Smith has traveled the length and
  1 18 breadth of this state communicating with Iowa union
  1 19 members and their elected leaders to promote education
  1 20 and fuller opportunities for all Iowa citizens; and
  1 21    WHEREAS, through his courageous and altogether
  1 22 unique personality and through his always eloquent and
  1 23 sometimes fearless use of the American vernacular, Mr.
  1 24 Smith has spoken truth to power in every setting of
  1 25 our political and economic landscape, making friends
  1 26 of those most in need of justice, and foes of those
  1 27 least willing to act justly; and
  1 28    WHEREAS, as a member of the Des Moines School Board
  1 29 and through his service on countless other
  1 30 governmental and nongovernmental boards and
  2  1 committees, Mr. Smith has carried his commitment to
  2  2 fight poverty, ignorance, and inequality beyond the
  2  3 labor movement, serving as a model of citizen
  2  4 involvement in the many other institutions of civil
  2  5 society; and
  2  6    WHEREAS, his work and life have made an indelible
  2  7 mark on the social, political, and economic history of
  2  8 our state; NOW THEREFORE,
  2  9    BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE, That the Senate, on
  2 10 behalf of all Iowans, honors Mark L. Smith, a
  2 11 remarkable and altogether memorable citizen of our
  2 12 state, and wishes him a fulfilling and happy
  2 13 retirement.
