Senate Resolution 146 - Introduced PAG LIN 1 1 SENATE RESOLUTION NO. ___ 1 2 BY JOHNSON 1 3 A Resolution honoring the city of Peterson, Iowa, on 1 4 its sesquicentennial. 1 5 WHEREAS, the 150=year=old city of Peterson, Iowa, 1 6 located on Iowa Highway 10 in the beautiful valley of 1 7 the Little Sioux River was first seen and settled by 1 8 the family of Christian Kirchner in April 1856 and 1 9 subsequently settled by the Ambrose Mead family and 1 10 the James Bicknell family in late summer of 1856; and 1 11 WHEREAS, the city of Peterson was the first Clay 1 12 county entity to establish a settlement, a post 1 13 office, the first frame building, first school, first 1 14 religious services, the first and only fort in the 1 15 area, the river dam, saw mill and grist mill, first 1 16 hotel, first retail stores, first newspaper, first 1 17 polling place, and first county seat and courthouse 1 18 (1860-1871); and 1 19 WHEREAS, after the Chicago Northwestern railroad 1 20 came in 1882, the Peterson area grew rapidly and was 1 21 the business mecca of the surrounding area; and 1 22 WHEREAS, the city of Peterson continues to exist as 1 23 a cooperative and active community with numerous 1 24 business organizations and four churches and is 1 25 located on one of Iowa's scenic byways; and 1 26 WHEREAS, Peterson is proud of its many museums, 1 27 including two homes of the Kirchner founding fathers, 1 28 a horse=drawn machinery museum, a restored one room 1 29 boxcar school house, the restored blockhouse of Fort 1 30 Peterson, a log cabin on its original site, and two 2 1 private museums, Jim Hass's History Barn and the 2 2 French Memorial Museum; and 2 3 WHEREAS, the community of Peterson boasts more new 2 4 homes than any of the small towns in Clay County; and 2 5 WHEREAS, the city of Peterson is celebrating its 2 6 150th anniversary with events scheduled before and on 2 7 August 4=6, 2006; NOW THEREFORE, 2 8 BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE, That the Senate 2 9 recognizes and extends its congratulations to the city 2 10 of Peterson on the city's sesquicentennial and invites 2 11 all Iowans to make the August celebration in Peterson 2 12 part of their summer vacation plans. 2 13 LSB 6639SS 81 2 14 jr:nh/gg/14.1 1
