  1  2                BY  JOHNSON and BOETTGER
  1  3 A Resolution honoring the life and accomplishments of
  1  4    Hugh Sidey.
  1  5    WHEREAS, the profession of journalism has lost one
  1  6 of its most accomplished members with the passing of
  1  7 Hugh Sidey on November 21, 2005; and
  1  8    WHEREAS, Mr. Sidey was born in Greenfield, Iowa, on
  1  9 September 3, 1927, and attended Iowa State University;
  1 10 and
  1 11    WHEREAS, Mr. Sidey began his remarkable career in
  1 12 journalism working in the family newspaper in
  1 13 Greenfield after being turned down by the Meredith
  1 14 Corporation and the Des Moines Register as
  1 15 "unqualified"; and
  1 16    WHEREAS, Mr. Sidey moved to the national scene in
  1 17 1955, working for Life magazine and later rising to
  1 18 become a veteran Time magazine correspondent covering
  1 19 the United States presidency for more than 40 years,
  1 20 from President Dwight Eisenhower to President George
  1 21 H. W. Bush; and
  1 22    WHEREAS, a few of the highlights of Mr. Sidey's
  1 23 career include covering President John F. Kennedy and
  1 24 Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchev at the Vienna summit
  1 25 meeting; covering the assassination of President
  1 26 Kennedy in November 1963; writing Time magazine's "The
  1 27 Presidency" column in 1966; traveling with President
  1 28 Richard Nixon on the President's breakthrough visit to
  1 29 China in 1972 and recording President Nixon's exit
  1 30 from Washington when the President resigned two years
  2  1 later; meeting regularly with President Ronald Reagan
  2  2 during his eight years in office and covering the
  2  3 president's famous "Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this
  2  4 wall" speech; being at the White House when President
  2  5 Bill Clinton brought Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak
  2  6 Rabin and Palestine Liberation Organization Chairman
  2  7 Yasser Arafat together for the famous 1993 handshake
  2  8 that began peace talks between Israel and the
  2  9 Palestine Liberation Organization; and serving as the
  2 10 narrator and interviewer in the popular 2000 public
  2 11 television series "The American President"; and
  2 12    WHEREAS, Mr. Sidey never forgot his Iowa roots and
  2 13 visited Iowa several times each year and frequently
  2 14 attributed his success in life to his Iowa beginnings;
  2 15 NOW THEREFORE,
  2 16    BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE, That the Senate
  2 17 honors the memory of Iowa's native son Hugh Sidey and
  2 18 celebrates both his life and his accomplishments.
