Senate Resolution 9 PAG LIN 1 1 SENATE RESOLUTION NO. ___ 1 2 BY HOLVECK, BEALL, BLACK, BOLKCOM, CONNOLLY, 1 3 COURTNEY, DEARDEN, DOTZLER, DVORSKY, FRAISE, 1 4 GRONSTAL, HATCH, HORN, KIBBIE, KREIMAN, McCOY, 1 5 QUIRMBACH, RAGAN, SENG, STEWART, and WARNSTADT 1 6 A Resolution to honor former President Jimmy Carter for 1 7 winning the Nobel Peace Prize for the year 2002. 1 8 WHEREAS, the Norwegian Nobel Committee has awarded 1 9 the Nobel Peace Prize for 2002 to former President 1 10 Jimmy Carter for his decades of untiring effort to 1 11 find peaceful solutions to international conflicts, to 1 12 advance democracy and human rights, and to promote 1 13 economic and social development; and 1 14 WHEREAS, through his Carter Center, founded in 1 15 1982, President Carter has traveled throughout the 1 16 world mediating conflicts, monitoring elections, 1 17 promoting human rights, building homes for the poor 1 18 through the Habitat for Humanity organization, and 1 19 providing health care and food to the world's poor; 1 20 and 1 21 WHEREAS, as the 39th President of the United 1 22 States, Carter brokered the Camp David peace agreement 1 23 of 1978 between Israel and Egypt, established full 1 24 diplomatic relations with the People's Republic of 1 25 China, and negotiated the SALT II nuclear limitation 1 26 treaty with the Soviet Union; and 1 27 WHEREAS, it is fitting and proper that the valiant 1 28 efforts of former President Carter be recognized and 1 29 honored; NOW THEREFORE, 1 30 BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE, That the Senate 2 1 recognizes the efforts of former President Jimmy 2 2 Carter to promote peace, democracy, and human rights 2 3 throughout the world. 2 4 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That upon adoption, a copy 2 5 of this Resolution be sent to former President Jimmy 2 6 Carter. 2 7 LSB 2058SS 80 2 8 kk/cl/14
