Senate Resolution 18 PAG LIN 1 1 SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 1 2 BY COURTNEY, DOTZLER, HORN, DEARDEN, BEALL, 1 3 STEWART, DVORSKY, CONNOLLY, GRONSTAL, BOLKCOM, 1 4 McCOY, KIBBIE, BLACK, RAGAN, SENG, WARNSTADT, 1 5 KREIMAN, FRAISE, HOLVECK, HATCH, and QUIRMBACH 1 6 A Resolution requesting an interim study regarding 1 7 the economic, fiscal, and social impact of 1 8 the establishment of a living wage in Iowa. 1 9 WHEREAS, the federal poverty threshold for a family 1 10 of four is $18,400; and 1 11 WHEREAS, an individual would have to earn an hourly 1 12 wage of $8.85 to maintain a family of four at the 1 13 federal poverty threshold; and 1 14 WHEREAS, the federal minimum wage for covered, 1 15 nonexempt employees is $5.15 per hour; and 1 16 WHEREAS, a person earning the minimum wage would 1 17 have a yearly income of $10,712; and 1 18 WHEREAS, more than 100,000 Iowans earn at or near 1 19 the minimum wage; and 1 20 WHEREAS, the General Assembly recognizes that 1 21 independence and dignity come with earning a living 1 22 wage; NOW THEREFORE, 1 23 BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE, That the Legislative 1 24 Council is requested to establish an interim committee 1 25 to review the economic, fiscal, and social impact of 1 26 the establishment of a living wage in Iowa; and 1 27 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That the members of the 1 28 interim committee include representatives of labor 1 29 organizations and small and large businesses, 1 30 authorities representing the appropriate fields of 2 1 study employed by the institutions of higher learning 2 2 under the control of the state board of regents, and 2 3 members of the General Assembly equally representing 2 4 the Senate and the House of Representatives and both 2 5 political parties; and 2 6 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That the interim committee 2 7 submit a report of its findings and recommendations 2 8 relating to the impact of the establishment of a 2 9 living wage in Iowa to the General Assembly by 2 10 December 15, 2003. 2 11 LSB 2388SS 80 2 12 kh/cf/24
