  1 11 A Resolution honoring George S. Mills for his service
  1 12    to the people of Iowa as a reporter, author, and
  1 13    noted Iowa historian.
  1 14    WHEREAS, George "Lefty" Mills was born on June 15,
  1 15 1906, in Chicago, Illinois, and began his career in
  1 16 Iowa in 1928 as a news reporter at the Marshalltown
  1 17 Times=Republican, and went on to work for the Iowa
  1 18 Daily Press Association, the Associated Press, the
  1 19 Cedar Rapids Gazette, the Des Moines Register where he
  1 20 worked for nearly 30 years, and WHO=TV; and
  1 21    WHEREAS, Mr. Mills became an influential and well=
  1 22 respected newsman for his insightful and prolific news
  1 23 stories covering many significant and controversial
  1 24 Statehouse and political issues, including but not
  1 25 limited to the Iowa Caucuses, the 1930s farm riots,
  1 26 governors' cars, secret liquor money, sleeping judges,
  1 27 Prohibition, reapportionment, and Prairie Meadows; and
  1 28    WHEREAS, Mr. Mills' versatile reporting style was
  1 29 further evidenced by his human interest stories
  1 30 covering both famous and ordinary Iowans from the
  2  1 colorful to the tragic, for which he received national
  2  2 recognition; and
  2  3    WHEREAS, Mr. Mills' keen reporting and research
  2  4 skills led to his collection of notes, diaries,
  2  5 correspondence, and photographs on many topics
  2  6 covering Iowa's rich history over nearly eight
  2  7 decades, and included many items which he generously
  2  8 donated to the Iowa State Historical Society; and
  2  9    WHEREAS, Mr. Mills' tireless energy and affinity
  2 10 for Iowa led him to author several books on Iowa
  2 11 history including a book on F. M. Hubbell, a book on
  2 12 the history of Iowa, and a book on the history of the
  2 13 Des Moines Register and the Des Moines Tribune; and
  2 14    WHEREAS, Mr. Mills is remembered by family,
  2 15 friends, and colleagues for his intelligence and
  2 16 enthusiastic and tenacious personality, and as a
  2 17 gentleman and a scholar, whose vast knowledge of
  2 18 Iowans, Iowa politics, and Iowa history is legendary;
  2 19 NOW THEREFORE,
  2 20    BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE, That the Senate
  2 21 honors the memory and the legacy of Mr. George S.
  2 22 Mills for his significant journalistic contributions,
  2 23 which provided a historical context for current events
  2 24 and touched the lives of Iowans from all walks of
  2 25 life; and
  2 26    BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That upon passage, the
  2 27 Secretary of the Senate shall deliver an official copy
  2 28 of this Resolution to his children, Mary Mills Dunea
  2 29 of Chicago, Illinois, Thomas M. Mills of Augusta,
  2 30 Georgia, George S. Mills III of Rockville, Maryland,
  3  1 and Katherine Sweney Mills Mace of Madison, Wisconsin;
  3  2 and his brother, Thomas W. Mills of Markeson,
  3  3 Wisconsin.
