  1  3 A Resolution honoring the nursing leaders at the
  1  4    University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics upon their
  1  5    receipt of the Magnet Award for Nursing Excellence.
  1  6    WHEREAS, the Magnet Nursing Services Recognition
  1  7 Program was established in 1993 by the American Nurses
  1  8 Association's American Nurses Credentialing Center,
  1  9 the nation's largest and foremost accrediting and
  1 10 credentialing organization for the nursing profession;
  1 11 and
  1 12    WHEREAS, the Recognition Program recognizes health
  1 13 care organizations that demonstrate sustained
  1 14 excellence in nursing care and uphold the tradition
  1 15 within nursing that supports professional nursing
  1 16 practice; and
  1 17    WHEREAS, the Recognition Program constitutes the
  1 18 highest level of recognition that the American Nurses
  1 19 Credentialing Center can accord to organized nursing
  1 20 services in the national and international health care
  1 21 communities; and
  1 22    WHEREAS, the Recognition Program awards its coveted
  1 23 honors only to hospitals that undergo a rigorous,
  1 24 voluntary evaluation process, and that demonstrate
  1 25 that they provide positive patient outcomes, recognize
  1 26 excellence in nursing services, and reward
  1 27 professional nursing achievement; and
  1 28    WHEREAS, the University of Iowa Hospitals and
  1 29 Clinics have been singled out as one of only about 100
  1 30 hospitals in the United States and the first hospital
  2  1 in the State of Iowa to receive the prestigious Magnet
  2  2 Award for Nursing Excellence; and
  2  3    WHEREAS, independent studies of Magnet hospitals
  2  4 have shown that patients who receive care in such
  2  5 centers average a shorter length of stay and have
  2  6 higher rates of satisfaction, and that nurses working
  2  7 in Magnet hospitals are more satisfied with their work
  2  8 and the care they provide and remain in the workplace
  2  9 for longer durations of time than do other nurses; and
  2 10    WHEREAS, achieving Magnet status for the University
  2 11 of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics was accomplished only
  2 12 through the dedicated teamwork of many nursing
  2 13 professionals led by Donna Katen=Bahensky, Director
  2 14 and Chief Executive Officer of the University of Iowa
  2 15 Hospitals and Clinics, and by Linda Q. Everett, Ph.D.,
  2 16 Associate Director and Chief Nursing Officer, and
  2 17 assisted by Barbara J. (B. J.) Hannon; NOW THEREFORE,
  2 18    BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE, That the Senate
  2 19 congratulates the nursing leaders at the University of
  2 20 Iowa Hospitals and Clinics for receiving the Magnet
  2 21 Award for Nursing Excellence, and expresses its
  2 22 appreciation for the dedication of nursing
  2 23 professionals at the University of Iowa, for their
  2 24 devotion to patients, and for performing the essential
  2 25 nursing care services which enable the University of
  2 26 Iowa Hospitals and Clinics to provide such high=
  2 27 quality health care to Iowans and nonresidents alike;
  2 28 and
  2 29    BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That official copies of
  2 30 this resolution be prepared and presented to Dr. David
  3  1 Skorton, President of the University of Iowa, to Donna
  3  2 Katen=Bahensky, Director and Chief Executive Officer
  3  3 of the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, and
  3  4 to Linda Q. Everett, Associate Director and Chief
  3  5 Nursing Officer of the University of Iowa Hospitals
  3  6 and Clinics, to be shared with all nursing personnel
  3  7 at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in
  3  8 recognition of the receipt of the prestigious Magnet
  3  9 Award for Nursing Excellence.
