  1  1    Section 1.  Section 80B.3, subsection 3, Code 2003, is
  1  2 amended to read as follows:
  1  3    3.  "Law enforcement officer" means an officer appointed by
  1  4 the director of the department of natural resources, a member
  1  5 of a police force or other agency or department of the state,
  1  6 county, or city, or tribal government regularly employed as
  1  7 such and who is responsible for the prevention and detection
  1  8 of crime and the enforcement of the criminal laws of this
  1  9 state and all individuals, as determined by the council, who
  1 10 by the nature of their duties may be required to perform the
  1 11 duties of a peace officer.
  1 12                           EXPLANATION
  1 13    This bill relates to tribal law enforcement officer
  1 14 training at the Iowa law enforcement academy.
  1 15    The bill provides that a law enforcement officer of a
  1 16 tribal government may receive training and be certified at the
  1 17 Iowa law enforcement academy in the same manner as currently
  1 18 provided for law enforcement officers of a county, city, or
  1 19 the state.
  1 20    The tribal government would be responsible for costs
  1 21 described in Code section 80B.11B, summarizing the costs that
  1 22 may be charged to train and certify a law enforcement officer.
