  1  3                 (COMPANION TO SCR 114)
  1  4 A Concurrent Resolution honoring the Iowa State Fair in
  1  5    its sesquicentennial year.
  1  6    WHEREAS, the inaugural Iowa State Fair was
  1  7 conducted in Fairfield, Iowa, in 1854, eight years
  1  8 after Iowa became a state; and
  1  9    WHEREAS, the Iowa State Fair is considered
  1 10 America's classic state fair, ranked as one of the top
  1 11 three fairs in North America by the Wall Street
  1 12 Journal, and identified by the New York Times as one
  1 13 of "1,000 Places to See Before You Die"; and
  1 14    WHEREAS, the Iowa State Fair includes the nation's
  1 15 largest food department among all the fairs, the
  1 16 largest art exhibit in this state, and one of the
  1 17 largest livestock exhibitions in the world; and
  1 18    WHEREAS, three motion pictures and a Broadway
  1 19 musical have been based on the Iowa State Fair; and
  1 20    WHEREAS, the Iowa State Fair is an important event
  1 21 for education, recreation, and economic development;
  1 22 and
  1 23    WHEREAS, the Iowa State Fair represents the state's
  1 24 preeminent tourist destination; and
  1 25    WHEREAS, over one million people attend the Iowa
  1 26 State Fair annually; and
  1 27    WHEREAS, the Iowa State Fair has an economic impact
  1 28 of over $70 million per year and supports
  1 29 approximately 2,700 jobs; and
  1 30    WHEREAS, the Iowa State Fair brings Iowa's people
  2  1 together in a spirit of cooperation, competition, and
  2  2 camaraderie; and
  2  3    WHEREAS, the Iowa State Fair is an institution that
  2  4 fulfills dreams, captures the imagination, and
  2  5 bolsters the morale in young and old alike; and
  2  6    WHEREAS, the home of the Iowa State Fair, the
  2  7 venerable Iowa State Fairgrounds, is listed on the
  2  8 National Register of Historic Places of the United
  2  9 States Department of the Interior's National Park
  2 10 Service; NOW THEREFORE,
  2 11    BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES, THE
  2 12 SENATE CONCURRING, That the General Assembly
  2 13 recognizes and honors the Iowa State Fair's
  2 14 sesquicentennial celebration to be held on August 12
  2 15 through 22, 2004; and
  2 16    BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That during its
  2 17 sesquicentennial year the General Assembly pay tribute
  2 18 to the efforts, creativity, and tenacity of those who
  2 19 have promoted, preserved, and loved the Iowa State
  2 20 Fair over the past 150 years; and
  2 21    BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That the General Assembly
  2 22 extends its appreciation to the members of the Iowa
  2 23 State Fair Board, the Secretary of the Iowa State Fair
  2 24 Board, and staff who deserve a blue ribbon for their
  2 25 dedication and efforts in ensuring that the Iowa State
  2 26 Fair continues to be a great source of pride for all
  2 27 Iowans; and
  2 28    BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That an official copy of
  2 29 this Resolution be prepared and presented to the
  2 30 Secretary of the Iowa State Fair Board.
