  1  1           HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION NO. ___
  1  2                  BY  TYMESON and LUKAN
  1  3 A Concurrent Resolution requesting the establishment of
  1  4    standing Senate and House subcommittees on veterans
  1  5    affairs.
  1  6    WHEREAS, approximately 280,000 veterans reside in
  1  7 the State of Iowa; and
  1  8    WHEREAS, important public policy issues relating to
  1  9 veterans are often considered and acted upon by state
  1 10 legislatures; and
  1 11    WHEREAS, the current procedures require that the
  1 12 Iowa veterans council and the commission of veterans
  1 13 affairs, in cooperation with one another, present
  1 14 veterans' issues to legislative committees which are
  1 15 often unfamiliar with the specific problems and needs
  1 16 of Iowa veterans; and
  1 17    WHEREAS, 30 other states have established
  1 18 legislative committees to address public policy issues
  1 19 relating to veterans; NOW THEREFORE,
  1 20    BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES, THE
  1 21 SENATE CONCURRING, That, to facilitate consideration
  1 22 of public policy issues relating to Iowa's veterans,
  1 23 the chairpersons of the Senate and House standing
  1 24 committees on State Government are requested to
  1 25 establish standing subcommittees on veterans affairs
  1 26 and to allow the subcommittees to meet jointly to
  1 27 review veterans issues.
  1 28    BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That the Rules and
  1 29 Administration Committee of the Senate is requested to
  1 30 consider recommending to the Senate a change to the
  2  1 Senate Rules to provide for the establishment of a
  2  2 permanent Senate subcommittee on veterans affairs
  2  3 within the State Government standing committee.
