Guest speakers: The Committee will hear an update from some of Iowa’s most well respected Cancer Specialists

Dr. Richard Deming is medical director of Mercy Cancer Center in Des Moines, Iowa. He received a bachelor’s degree at South Dakota State University and his medical degree at Creighton University. Dr. Deming is known in the community for the compassionate care he provides cancer patients and their families. He is involved in many national, state and community organizations and is the recipient of numerous awards. He was awarded the Lane Adams Award by the American Cancer Society for excellence and compassion in patient care. He is the recipient of “the one hundred” Award by Massachusetts General Hospital for his work with cancer survivors. He was awarded the Iowa Cancer Champion Award for his tireless efforts in the field of advocacy. He is dedicated to the principals of human dignity, social justice, and compassion. His greatest ambition is to encourage others to pursue lives of meaning, purpose, passion and compassion. Dr. Deming also serves at the National Board Chair for the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network (ACS CAN), is the Vice Board Chair for the Iowa Cancer Consortium, and is the Founder of Above + Beyond Cancer, a nonprofit organization dedicated to elevating the lives of those touched by cancer.

Dr. Michael K. Schultz, PhD is an Associate Professor of Radiology and Pediatrics at the University of Iowa. Dr. Schultz is also Chief Science Officer of Viewpoint Molecular Targeting, Inc., a company that operates in Coralville, Iowa. Dr. Schultz performs research on cancer biology and in particular on the ways that cancer cells adapt to current therapies. His company has developed a new therapy for metastatic melanoma (a lethal form of skin cancer) that can overcome these adaptive responses. The new paradigm of cancer treatment is called “Theranostics” and describes drugs that possess both diagnostic and therapeutic properties.

Dr. Gregory Ursino is a board-certified physician presently serving on the health systems team at Bristol Myers Squibb Oncology. Dr. Ursino completed his medical school training at Pennsylvania State University and his residency training in Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of Rochester in Rochester, NY. He practiced at the University of Pittsburgh for a number of years before working in the managed care setting. After serving as the medical director for national accounts at Blue Cross Blue Shield of Illinois, Dr. Ursino moved into the pharmaceutical profession. He worked at Glaxo Smith Kline and Novartis Oncology prior to joining Bristol Myers Squibb in 2013.

INTERACTIVE DRUG PRICING EXERCISE

WITH SENATE/HOUSE HUMAN RESOURCES COMMITTEES

With drug pricing a hot topic in the media and discussions around some state capitals, IowaBio member Celgene is holding hands-on, interactive drug pricing exercises to educate legislators and other stakeholders in the public policy arena about the complexities of drug discovery. The exercise will give participants a first-person perspective on being CEO of a biopharmaceutical company, including making decisions for research and development and pricing a new innovative medicine.

Participants will have the opportunity to learn about the various complex factors involved when making these important decisions, and throughout the exercise you will have to vote on key decisions for your company with the opportunity to discuss these decisions with fellow participants for a deeper understanding of the complexity of the biopharmaceutical business and bringing innovative medicines to patients.

We have a panel of representatives from Celgene, the University of Iowa School of Pharmacy, the American Cancer Society and PhRMA available to conduct this hour-long exercise with your Committee at 3 pm on Tuesday, March 20^th in the Legislative Dining Room.
